In 2004, First United Methodist Church of LaGrange adopted a logo design to represent the church. This new logo features a cross and flame intertwined with symbolic elements -- many of which were taken from the church architecture and history.
The oval shape in the middle of the logo was derived from circular windows that appear on the exterior of the sanctuary and the Methodist Ministries building. These circular windows have four decorative keystones forming the shape of a cross. The keystones have flared ends, as does the four points of the cross in the design.
The flared ends of the cross have two points each. In total there are eight points of the cross which are symbolic of regeneration and the eight beatitudes.
First United Methodist of LaGrange is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. In the center of the logo rests a bright, fiery flame. The flame is symbolic of the power of the Holy Spirit. The cross and flame also remind us of our United Methodist heritage and affiliation. The United Methodist Church organization is represented by the traditional empty cross and flame logo.
An abstract rendering of a heart sits inside of the Flame. The official United Methodist message of “Open Hearts. Open Minds. Open Doors.” was the inspiration of the use of the heart.
The center of the flame also resembles a chalice. The chalice is a symbol of Holy Communion and the forgiveness of sin.
The established date of First United Methodist Church of LaGrange, 1828, rests at the base of the cross.
The number 12 is prominent in the design. There are 12 elements in the design. The number of original members of First United Methodist Church of LaGrange is 12, as is the number of tribes in Israel and the number of Disciples.
